Trump Sweeping Tax-Cut, Spending Bill Clears First Senate Hurdle

Trump Sweeping Tax-Cut, In a dramatic late-night session, the U.S. Senate narrowly voted 51-49 on Saturday to advance President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax-cut and spending bill, marking a key milestone for legislation that could reshape federal tax policy, spending priorities, and social programs for years to come.

The 940-page bill — championed by Trump as his “One Big Beautiful Bill” — now moves into a formal debate period expected to last into Monday. The legislation includes a broad package of tax reductions, increased military and border security spending, and significant changes to Medicaid and the federal debt ceiling.

A Divided Vote

Despite holding a Senate majority, Republicans saw defections from two of their own: Senators Thom Tillis (NC) and Rand Paul (KY) joined Democrats in voting against opening debate.

Senator Tillis objected to proposed Medicaid cuts, warning they would hurt hospitals and healthcare providers in rural North Carolina. Trump quickly blasted Tillis on social media and signaled support for a primary challenger.

Senator Paul’s opposition centered on the bill’s plan to raise the federal borrowing limit by $5 trillion. “What’s wrong with this guy?” Trump asked publicly.

Yet after hours of backroom negotiations led by Majority Leader John Thune and Vice President JD Vance, the bill secured enough votes to proceed. Notably, Senator Ron Johnson (WI) switched from “no” to “yes” in a late-night reversal.

Legislative Process Ahead

Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, forced the chamber to begin reading the bill aloud — a procedural move that could delay debate until Sunday afternoon. Once reading concludes, lawmakers will enter up to 20 hours of debate, followed by a “vote-a-rama” where a flurry of amendments can be introduced.

If the Senate ultimately approves the bill, it must then return to the House for reconciliation and final passage before reaching Trump’s desk.

Major Provisions

Trump Sweeping Tax-Cut, The legislation would:

  • Extend the 2017 Trump tax cuts, including lower corporate and individual tax rates.

  • Boost military and border security funding.

  • Raise the debt ceiling by trillions to avoid default.

  • Restructure Medicaid reimbursements and delay cuts to rural providers.

  • Increase the cap on SALT (state and local tax) deductions to $40,000 through 2029.

However, the nonpartisan Joint Tax Committee estimates the tax changes would reduce federal revenues by $4.5 trillion over the next decade. The White House argues these cuts will drive economic growth and reduce the deficit by $1.4 trillion annually.

Critics Speak Out

Democrats have blasted the bill as a giveaway to the wealthy at the expense of low-income Americans. “Senate Republicans are scrambling to pass a radical bill, released in the dead of night, hoping no one notices what’s in it,” Schumer said.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, also criticized the bill for removing EV tax credits: “Utterly insane and destructive,” he posted on X.

Looking Ahead

While Trump and his allies have called the Senate vote a “great victory,” the legislation still faces hurdles in both chambers. Expect fierce debate in coming days as both sides dig in over the bill’s impact on healthcare, taxes, and the national debt.
