Marine Corps Passes Audit as DOD Targets 2028 for Full Financial Accountability

DOD Targets 2028, The U.S. Marine Corps has passed its financial audit, setting an example for the rest of the Defense Department (DOD), which aims to achieve full audit compliance by 2028. This goal was reinforced during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing by Bryn Woollacott MacDonnell, the acting DOD comptroller, who shared that two other DOD components have also passed audits.

2028 Audit Goal

MacDonnell explained that from day one, auditing has been a top priority, with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issuing yearly milestone targets. The department is on track to achieve a “clean audit opinion” across all branches within the next three years.

FY2026 Budget Proposal

Hegseth and Air Force Gen. Dan Caine also presented the FY2026 defense budget, proposing a boost to $961.6 billion, a $113.3 billion increase from FY2025. Key allocations include:

  • $25B for the Golden Dome missile defense

  • $62B to modernize nuclear forces

  • $47B for Navy shipbuilding

  • $3.5B for the new F-47 aircraft

  • Investments in long-range drones, hypersonics, and autonomous tech

Improving Service Members’ Lives

The budget also aims to enhance service member quality of life through better housing, healthcare, and a reformed Permanent Change of Station (PCS) process to ease family relocations.

Efficiency and Savings

Since January, the DOD has identified $30 billion in savings, which will be reinvested into priorities like restoring warrior ethos, rebuilding military strength, and reestablishing deterrence.
