Sleeper Cells and Hezbollah’s Influence
Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed terrorist organization, has long maintained a presence in the West, including in the U.S. While no recent domestic attacks have been publicly confirmed, law enforcement believes sleeper cells could be activated in response to U.S. military action against Iran or its interests.

The current surge in activity is not without precedent. Since the 2020 assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani — ordered by then-President Trump — intelligence agencies have tracked an uptick in plots involving Iranian operatives on U.S. soil.
Late last year, federal prosecutors charged a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), along with two U.S.-based accomplices, with plotting to surveil and assassinate critics of the Iranian regime. Investigators revealed that the IRGC operative had been encouraged by senior officials to plan an attack on President Trump himself.
Other U.S. figures targeted in similar plots have included former National Security Adviser John Bolton and Iranian-American journalist Masih Alinejad, both outspoken critics of Tehran. Bolton was granted Secret Service protection in 2021, although Trump revoked that protection earlier this year — a move that raised security concerns among national security professionals.
Potential Military Strike on Iran Under Review
Sources confirm that President Trump is actively weighing a potential strike on Iran’s Fordo nuclear site. The facility, which plays a key role in uranium enrichment, has been under close international scrutiny for years. If approved, the strike would mark a major escalation and could align the U.S. with Israel’s ongoing campaign against Iranian targets.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged Thursday that Trump will make a final decision within the next two weeks. She added, “There’s a substantial chance of negotiation that may or may not take place,” hinting that diplomatic channels with Tehran remain open but uncertain.
Iran’s Threat of Retaliation Looms
Iranian officials have warned that any U.S. military action will provoke a direct response. With multiple international players now entangled in high-stakes decisions, U.S. law enforcement is preparing for possible domestic consequences.
In the past, Iranian-linked plots have involved not just espionage and surveillance, but direct plans to assassinate high-profile figures. This risk, combined with rising political tensions, is driving Patel’s aggressive strategy to secure the homeland.
