Secretary Kennedy has made synthetic dye elimination a central focus of his public health agenda. State-level legislation has accelerated the timeline. New laws in California and other states are introducing restrictions on artificial food colors and additives. Rather than risk losing access to key markets, companies are moving swiftly to comply.
Major food giants like Nestlé, Kraft Heinz, Conagra Brands, and General Mills are already phasing out synthetic dyes from their product lines. This trend has extended to school food programs, where dairy companies recently pledged to remove dyes from milk, yogurt, and cheese by July 2026.
Scope of the Ice Cream Commitment
The new ice cream industry pledge covers all products made with real dairy milk and sold in major retail outlets — including supermarkets, gas stations, and online stores. However, it excludes:

Americans’ Love for Ice Cream Fuels Reform
The U.S. churned out approximately 1.3 billion gallons of ice cream in 2024. With Americans consuming an average of 19 pounds — or nearly four gallons — per person each year, the public health implications of cleaner ingredients are substantial.
