GOP Moves Forward Amidst Fiscal Warning
Senate Pushes One Big Beautiful Bill, The U.S. Senate has entered a high-stakes final stretch to pass President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, even after the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) revealed the legislation could add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over 10 years.
Republicans voted narrowly—51 to 49—to open debate on the sweeping 940-page bill that extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, increases military and border spending, and rewrites several welfare programs.
Trump Celebrates, Fiscal Hawks Push Back
President Trump celebrated the procedural win on Truth Social, calling it a “great victory” and promising economic growth would “make it all up, times 10.” But not all Republicans are on board.
Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky broke ranks, voting against the bill. Tillis warned that the legislation fails to protect Medicaid recipients in his home state, potentially breaking Trump’s promise not to cut the program.
“What do I tell 663,000 people when they lose Medicaid?” Tillis asked from the Senate floor.
Democrats Blast ‘Fake Math’
Democratic leaders are attacking both the bill and the math behind it. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the GOP’s alternative budget model “fake math” designed to hide the true cost. He also accused Republicans of using gimmicks to pass the most expensive bill in U.S. history.
Vote-a-Rama and Final Passage Loom
Senators now enter a “vote-a-rama”—a grueling amendment process followed by a final vote, possibly late Monday. The GOP aims to get the bill passed before July 4, fulfilling Trump’s deadline.
Debt Ceiling Crisis Approaches
If passed, the bill must return to the House for final approval. However, a much more urgent issue waits: the debt ceiling. Congress must raise it later this summer or risk defaulting on the now $36.2 trillion national debt.
